Kyrsten's Story

Kyrsten Mate is celebrating over 20 years in the film industry after working on diverse projects ranging from animated Pixar films and superhero sci-fi extravaganzas, to hard-hitting David Fincher tales. She graduated from the Broadcast and Communication Arts department of San Francisco State University and immediately entered film post production. From her early time at Saul Zaentz Film Center and American Zoetrope, she has experienced all aspects of audio post production; including sound design, effects recording, sound editing, and the final mixing process. Many luminaries in the directing world have crossed her path during her long career; including those as distinct as Anthony Minghella, Francis Ford Coppola, Brad Bird, Walter Murch, Steven Spielberg and John Waters. Working in the world of sound effects is a labor of joy for her; Kyrsten truly believes in the power of carefully designed audio as a means to shape perception. She has worked on over 80 features, is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and has won several Motion Picture Sound Editors Guild awards. Kyrsten is currently a sound designer at Skywalker Sound in Marin, California.
